Prohibition: A law or regulation forbidding something. Prohibition was a time period in the 1920s that lasted for nearly 14 years of U.S. history in which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol was made illegal. After the American Revolution, drinking was on the rise but a number of societies were organized as a part of the new Temperance movement which attempted to dissuade people to not be intoxicated.

Why was there prohibition? There were 4 main reasons for prohibition: medical, economic, political and social.

  •  Medical: In the 1920s people started to realize that alcohol could affect our lives and damage our health. Back then many men suffered from Sclerosis which was caused from large consumed amounts of alcohol, many of these men suffered horribly and eventually died.Due to this many children lived their lives without their fathers, which eventually lead to their family's financial problems.

Economic: Plenty of laborers got drunk and could not perform their jobs properly. Their absences from work each week was very high, which left the companies to be less efficient. The company's could not afford to produce the same products in the time that they should have and the industrialists were unsatisfied.

Political: In rural areas many votes were won because politicians promised to back up prohibition, which helped those politicians win the election.

Social: Many of the husbands had started to spend their money on alcohol instead of essential items such as education. This caused many arguments and even divorce and also lead many women to set up anti-saloon groups.
